Random XS - As It Takes

Excellent acid track from 1994 on the DJAX label.

Posting the Optimo mix below put me in the mood for some Pure-style acid.

A1 starts with a vocal loop of "Can I taste" (girl), "Can I taste" (boy), "Can I taste" (girl), repeats it for a couple of minutes then lets the 303 riff sneak in and take over the mix for another epic acid journey courtesy of Random XS.

A couple of great tracks on the flip make this another great DJAX EP.

So... Weatherall tonight then. I'm going as Moggie-nae-pals as m'lady is entertaining folk (worky pals, ie not up for this kinda nonsense), mates are all either too skint, no well, or on holiday to exotic places like Vegas and Spain. Cunts! Considered not going but couldn't contemplate missing another Glasgow show, especially as 2009 has been a classic Weatherall year. Will head in about midnight and hopefully see a few familiar faces.

I'll give a full match report when I return to planet earth which may or may not be tomorrow...

Signal To Noise Ratio - Detroit Is Burning

A great EP from 1991 from Alan Oldham. One of these cunts who is multi-talented like fuck - DJ, various great records, AND responsible for all the magnificent DJAX artwork.

The A1 track reminds me of a classic Detroit track that had slipped my mind for just now - I've got it somewhere. Really annoying, it's now going round my head and I can't shake it. Anyone...?

Steve Poindexter - The Remixes

"Work that, work that mutha fucker..."

I bought this for the Edge Of Motion mix of the classic track mentioned above, and was delighted with the other three remixes on the 12". DJAX went through a phase of getting old Chicago tracks mixed by European folks, and this is quite a line-up. Like A Tim cuts the sample down to "work...fuck...work" for a while - a nice sentiment indeed.

The two tracks on the B-side do away with any vocal and are both great wee old-skool tracks. Check out the backwards drum bits and great acid hook on B2...

China White - China White EP

Another DJAX EP here, from 1993. Bit of an unusual one, in that the three guys responsible don't look (to me anyway) as if they've done much else. Ever. Two of them had an EP out called Dark Llama and that's it!

It's a great EP as well, dunno what happened after. Mind you, given the not-so-subtle name of their act maybe they chose not to choose life, and we know what happens then, right kids?

After a fairly average low-key A1 track, it all gets going with A2, as so many of those DJAX efforts do. Loads of great acid noises going on, with a nice subtle synth riff sneaking in behind it. B1 tones down the acid a wee bit and ups the strings. B2 is the one I always remember though, a great bass hook that I've heard out and about a few times back in the day...

Another DJAX release from Random XS, one of the first acts to appear on this blog way back in January, when I had beginner's nerves and was only posting the 'TUNE' off an EP. I've gone for the full shebang this time, but the 'TUNE' is definitely B1, flange-tastic and fucks yer head about with loads of spacey noises. Another one which graced the decks at Pure on more than one occasion...

Like A Tim - Game Girl EP

Like A Tim - always a winner in the west of Scotland with a name like that. I can imagine that a few fannies wouldn't have bought any of his records on principle.

Also known as "that Pure tune with the Blondie sample" (track B2, as if you wouldn't have guessed), this is Tim's debut EP for DJAX, from 1992. Is that track A2 attempting txt spk before it caught on? Tim must've been a Prince fan I guess...

Worth grabbing, even if it's just for the 3 minute Heart Of Glass track.

Greyhawk - Boiled Acid EP

Nothing but DJAX today:

One of two records that Michiel Holtgreve (me neither) released under the Greyhawk alias for DJAX, this one does exactly what it says on the tin. Should appeal to any Ege Bam Yasi or old-skool DJAX fans. As with a lot of this shit, the B-side is better than the A-side, but there you go...

Clementine - Time Explored EP

... aka Luke Slater's DJAX moniker.

Rather than the full-on techno of Planetary Assault Systems, this sees Luke, if not exactly in 'electronic listening music' mode, then certainly less pounding-pounding-techno-music. Well, on some of it anyway... Lots of nice flange on A1 (we like the flange round these parts).

Claude Young - Nocturnal EP

I'm sure Claude Young's been 'ripped in Glasgow' a few times, as he moved here in 2002. I saw him a few times back in the 90s and he blew me away - a techno DJ playing like a hiphop DJ. Magnificent.

This EP's got four very different tracks on it, my personal favs are A2 & B1 but I've included the full thing so that you can make your own mind up. B1 is flange-tastic.

Nice blue vinyl as well - I'm a sucker for that kinda pish...

Analogical - 303 Ocean

The most appropriately titled track on the blog so far, a great experimental techno track. Another one from DJAX, only this time it was on nice clear yellow vinyl which is always a Brucie Bonus. Another anal fact is that this is one of the few EPs where the TUNE is the 2nd track on the A-side.

Random XS - Give Your Body

Aciiiiieeed!

From the classic DJAX-Up-Beats label, this hails from 1992 and was a favourite at Pure in Edinburgh around that time. DJAX supposedly stood for DJs Against eXtasy. A Dutch label? Hmmm, hardly a vote-winner is it? Still managed to be a ridiculously consistent label which churned them out like nobody's business. At the standard £7.50 import price I couldn't afford too many of 'em, but this one was well worth it.
