Majic 12 - The Last Battle

This is a mysterious looking one-sided 12" on the Beau Monde label from Detroit that's got a mental 'post apocalyptic' story etched onto the other side! The guy who produced it is Scott Edward, who also did stuff as Uriel if that helps.

It's brilliantly old-skool spacey electro in sound, but somehow manages to sound up-to-date as well (well, 1995 up-to-date anyway). It gets 4/4 after about 5 mins and would be a great tune to build up a set with.

A lost wee gem, which I'd completely forgotten about until spotting it just there. Go check it oot...

Robert Hood - Moveable Parts Chapter 1

Another 1995 release from Robert Hood, which bears more than a passing resemblance to track D1 from this previous rip, but it's a great track so we'll not hold it against him. Who says that minimal techno aint got no soul? He's a Ripped In Glasgow hero, for still using vinyl in 2009, if this pic is anything to go by.

Mind you, not the most inspired of track titles this time round. B1's got a scratch at the start that's actually in time with the music - mental...

Paperclip People - 4 My Peepz

"This one's 4 my peepz"...

One of the last Carl Craig records I bought (from 1998), this sees him in Paperclip People mode (always a favourite pseudonym round these parts).

Quite a slow tune, it toddles along nicely for upwards of 12 mins, loads of great noises going on, and some of those trademark sudden changes of drum sound that he tends to fire into PP releases. Great remix on the flip as well, before this insane metallic sounding bonus track that's a bit nuts.

I had a laugh there when checking the stats for the blog - some Greek deviant had stumbled across the site by googling (on google.gr) "grandmothers fuck in shower" --> try clicking it, R-i-G comes up second! Hey - at least he ended up with a great Red Planet track to listen to while tugging himself off...

Bango - Sphinx / Mystical Adventure

This sees Stacey Pullen in a different mode form the norm, Sphinx being an organ-led track with a nice wee breakdown in it, but Mystical Adventure is where it's at - featuring all those classic Detroit sounds that you'd expect.

Fraid that's all you're getting today as I'm struggling like fuck due to an over-indulgent Easter weekend. I feel like the guy at the end of the Weekender video. Too many eggs...

Model 500 - I Wanna Be There

The standout track from the Sonic Sunset double-pack. I'd have ripped the whole thing but I've somehow managed to lose the other record. What a fud.

This is over 18 minutes of classic soulful Detroit, courtesy of 'Magic' Juan. I'm pretty sure he played this the first time I saw him, at Club 69 in Paisley. If the other record materialises in the near future I'll do a full upload but in the meantime kick back and enjoy the magic...

Jeff Mills - Java EP

This is the first release on the Purpose Maker label by the man whose name seems to mean more in rhyming slang than it does for music nowadays. Or maybe that's just amongst my friends...

The first time I saw Jeff Mills DJ at Pure I think he played about 50 records in the first 5 minutes. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but he was flinging them about like a loony. I loved it, and returned to see the Jeff Mills show a few times after that.

The last time I saw him was in Rub-A-Dub where he was signing a DVD release. I got him to sign my iPod, a sign of the times...

Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes - Serious Techno Vol. 1

Another oldie here, this dates from 1991. This was before my indoctrination into the ways of the dance, give or take the odd Screamadelica-era Primal Scream or Orb gig. Did an extensive bit of back-tracking though, thanks to a healthy supply of vinyl in the Glasgow area.

Whether it could be classed as 'serious' techno or not, it's a fuckin' great EP, from the "Godfather of techno soul" as he likes to call himself. Fair enough, he used to always get brushed over on all those 'history of techno' articles which concentrated on the 'big three' of May, Saunderson and Atkins. He's still knocking 'em out as well, unlike certain other 'pioneers'...

"Do not allow yourself to be programmed"... wise words there from 'Oz' on the title track.

This 8-track(!)UR double-pack varies from superb techno to electro beats to minimal squelchy noises to classic uplifting UR strings & synths. Magnificent!

When I got this it was in a plain brown shrink-wrapped cardboard cover with absolutely no information about what was contained inside. All I knew was that it was the latest UR double-pack and that was good enough for me. Quite bizarre as I don't have a huge amount of them, just took a wee notion for this one. Glad I did now, it's a classic fucking release.

Ultramarine - Hooter (Carl Craig Remix)

I was never a fan of Ultramarine, but this Carl Craig remix is top dollar. One of the few records I've got which feature a saxophone but don't let that put you off.

I was right into Carl Craig at this point, the man could do no wrong. Well, apart from the fact that he was (is?) pish at mixing, but who gives a fuck when he can knock out tracks like this for 2nd rate crusties...

Another one on the Plink Plonk label seeing as how I've just pulled it out of a random box. This sees a magnificent Kenny Larkin remix of the LA Synthesis tune from 1995. It's driven by a great pumpin' bass hook that's great to mix with. Goes on for fuckin' ages as well (11:55) so you can go for a piss during it no probs.

The other side's remixed by Nuw Idol and is a bit ambient drum'n'bassy --> not Friday night material so maybe another time for that one...

Juan Atkins gets all minimal here, accompanied by an even minimaler mix by Maurizio on the flip. A nice wee white vinyl number, this was wrongly labelled with which one was which. Fuck's sake - it's not rocket science - a 50/50 chance, just like playing, ripping and uploading a 12" at the right speed. Oh...

Like I said before, three of the four tracks are fairly downbeat (in fact one is beatless), but if that floats yer boat then get stuck in. Not your average chill-out - this is pretty fucked-up shit.

Manuel And Clive - Molecules

Here's a bit of hard acid for you, courtesy of Manuel and Clive. It's weird, just looked them up on Discogs and it turns out they only released two records and I've got both of them. Didn't realise the other one was them as it's an anonymous black & red clear vinyl thing that plays from the inside out. The magic of the internet!

Anyway back to this track, it's another one of those where the 'tune' is track B1 rather than the A-side (hence the wrong label on the graphic). It starts off like a fairly average acid track then there's a beautiful breakdown and pounding 2nd half. I seem to be using the word 'pounding' rather a lot in this blog, if only there was a techno thesauraus to hand...

Underground Resistance - World 2 World

Listening to that Carl Craig tune down below put me right in the mood for this, my favourite ever Detroit record. Four of the best UR tracks on one 12" - the first one, "Amazon", used to be a frequent response to the "One More Tune" chant at the likes of Pure. I think I've actually heard every track in a club.

This record has taken a pounding over the years so there might be the odd wee crackle here and there.

BFC - Chicken Noodle Soup

"I WANT MY CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP"... So goes the voice at the end of this track. That's you sorted if Carl Craig ever pops round for his dinner. He'd not get it in this house though, I'm more of a spicy tomato & lentil man myself.

This was always the stand-out track on this EP, the rest of it was a bit too downbeat for me. I like my Detroit techno to be dancey; leave the ambient noodling to the likes of The Orb, man.

The Martian - Star Dancer

You might have noticed I've had the painters in here at R-i-G Towers. This tune goes out to my main man DG who is responsible for the facelift. Not only is he a STAR, but he's a no bad wee DANCER when the mood takes him *cough*...

This, like the Cajmere one below, was one of the first ever *TUNE*s that I heard when I started clubbing, one of those ones where I just had to know what it was. "What the fuck's that flanged track?" was the question on all our lips.

Once I got my paws on it I took it round to a mate's house who (a) had decks and (b) had another copy of this (I didn't get my decks till my first proper pay packet in 1995). He'd figured that if you played two copies together the phasing would go nuts. Sure enough it does. If you have this record you should mix it to this mp3 and see for yourself. Even if not, try to play it on an mp3 mixing thing like VirtualDJ. Mental!

Gilgamesh - Trescore

This is a lost classic - kinda Detroit trance, if that makes any sense. Listen to it and you'll see what I mean. It just builds and builds. One of those ones that when I first heard it out I had to go up and ask what it was, then somehow remember the details till the Monday morning trip to Rub-A-Dub. Pre-Shazam days, indeed!

Red Planet - Ghostdancer Double Pack

This stems from back in 1995 or so, when it was perfectly reasonable to pay £14.99 on a regular basis for a double-pack 12" single. I used to enjoy seeing how carefully I could slit down the shrink wrap so that it kept its shape and didn't shrivel up. What a sad cunt...

So - Red Planet. One-hit-wonders with Stardancer/Cosmic Movement? Surely not - I'd dare to say that as a collection, this is more than a match for that track, although it got a lot more 'playin out' at the likes of Pussypower and Pure. (Scroll a wee bit down here for more on Pure, including a wee mixtape)
