Optimo - I Love Techno - 13 November 2010

Our heroes live in Ghent a couple of weeks ago.

Banging in Belgium? Oh yes. Complete with shouty over-excited MC this takes no prisoners - you can forget the Nina Simone / This Mortal Coil side of Optimo here, this is back to the old PURE days in style.

Taken from the gig itself you can hear the manual touching-up and down of the 12"s, which makes a change from some of the over-produced so-called 'live mixes' you hear floating about these days.

Bastard! Got a tweet from JD Twitch last night to say "ha ha! I knew you couldn't stop" when I did the post below. Aye very good. Definitely not back for good, but we can't have a Weatherall without an Optimo, can we? A two-off, if you will.

Right - off to see Atari Teenage Riot, should clear out the midweek cobwebs...

Cold Cave – Life Magazine (An Optimo (Espacio) Flexi-Pop Mix)

Unreleased wee gem from Cold Cave via FACT Magazine.

I'm off to see this lot at the Captain's Rest in Glasgow tomorrow night and cannae fuckin wait. Haven't seen them before, but will soon get the chance again at the Primavera Festival in a few weeks. This superb remix won't be on any of the formats of the new single, and is only up on FACT for a week, so here's a perma-link for anyone who missed it.

For the uninitiated, Pitchfork said that their sound "weaves incomprehensibly distorted vocals with bits of synthetic feedback", but some songs "also come bearing serious hooks." What a load of wank, eh?

Anyway, if you're in the area you could do a lot worse than getting the fuck down tomorrow...

Optimogeddon - The Final Optimo - 25 April 2010

Full 7-hr rip from last night's shenanigans.

After a brief foray into broadcasting live on AWDIO.com last year, Twitch and Wilkes decided to stop it as it didn't really capture the atmosphere of the club. "Too clinical", apparently. Fair do's, but thank fuck they hooked it up again for this monster of a swansong.

Technical stuff: It missed the first minute or two (AWDIO, not me - I was refreshing like a madman) but apart from that you've got the full thing, split into 5x mp3 files. The program I use to rip stuff like this had spilt it into 7 files of its own choosing by the time I looked at it this morning. I've made three into one (seamless-ish) but the gaps between the rest of the files were in the hands of the gods. No noticeable gaps anyway...

*EDIT* turns out my computer missed off the banter at the end followed by the last two tunes (superb video footage here). I've changed the file for Pt 5 or you can grab the last 15 mins on their own via the link underneath it... *EDIT*

Of all the stuff I've read about Optimo in recent weeks, it's this Resident Advisor article that hits the nail on the head perfectly. Fuck knows how many people didn't make it in last night, as you should have seen the state of the queue very early on. According to the Sub Club's website it holds 400 people. Hmmm.

I listened to bits and pieces of it last night before I went to bed, but it was doing my nut in to do so. I made the mistake of following the action on Twitter as well, with everycunt commenting on what was on the stream. Couldn't sleep for ages as I was going through all sorts of emotions. Attempting to make do with the memories of our last visit a fortnight ago wasn't really cutting it.

Tune-wise I'll not spoil any of it for you, but rest assured that a good few of the Optimo 250 made it into the set (166 of 'em on this Spotify playlist if you feel the need). Only thing that's missing from this is the crowd, who certainly add plenty to it on the brief moments you hear them via the mic.

Well I guess that's it then. Cheers fellas. They loved our ears...

Betty Botox Presents... The World Of Betty Botox

Rare 2xLP from Glasgow's own sultry diva, Betty Botox, from 2005.

So - went to my last Optimo there on Sunday night. There are two more to go but there's no way I can make either of them, so this was our big farewell. FUCK ME - it was the best one I've ever had. Crowd were totally up for it, and the tunes ticked all the boxes including lots of Optimo classics, what sounded like Merzbow(!) at one point, along with a brilliant industrial track and a bit of Bauhaus which kept the smile on my (ex?) goth girlfriend's coupon all night. Not to mention a few Pure anthems including a couple with Hoover noises thrown in (always a good thing). Add in a couple of en-masse singalongs at the end and there you have it. Mental. JD Twitch reported that it was the best atmosphere that he had seen in 23 years of DJing and I'll not argue with that - magnificent stuff. Fuck knows what they're going to pull out of the bag for the last couple (I've heard the words 'Divine impersonator' bandied about though)...

I've finally recovered, this being Wednesday an' all that, so here's three tracks (side B) off a set of "quantized bootleg re-edits made suitable for mixing" from in-house slut Betty, which should be familiar to anyone who's been to the club. The original tracks are in brackets after the Botox'd titles, so as you can see it's a pretty fuckin varied list. The full album is available digitally from Juno if you like what you hear here.

I've gone on and on about Optimo in the past and it has been a life changing club (alongside predecessor Pure), but the time has come to move on to pastures new. I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunity to go and see the cunts DJ in the future at one-offs and whatnot so no need to panic (might even manage to fit one in this Friday). However, the end is nigh for this particular vehicle.

Cheers Twitch, cheers Wilkes, it's been a great 12 and a bit years of madness...

Optimo - Hogmanay End of the Decade Poptimo Mix

Originally available as a 90 minute mix for all Hogmanay ticket holders who went to the Fruitmarket extravaganza exactly one month ago.

I didn't make it along this time but managed to get a copy of the mix, which as you would expect is outstanding. Check out the tracklisting - an excellent selection, with a few wee exclusive mixes chucked in for good measure.

Didn't want to step on anyone's toes by putting this up earlier but this seems like a suitable time to make it more public.

For all the bizarre styles that they have slipped into mixes over the years, this is a very good example of straight-up party music (very Hogmanay!) which has been played round these parts on quite a few occasions ever since.

Here's to an other 11(!) years...

Optimo Podcast 3 - Take A Stroll Through Your Mind

Number 3 already? That's almost prolific.

A bit different this time round, very different in fact. You might not think it's to your taste given the blurb below but I'd say give it a blast - it's opened my ears to world music anyway.

It's the work of JD Twitch this time round:

"This Podcast is called "Take a stroll through your mind" and is a selection of songs with a psychedelic feel from around the world. All of the music is from the late 1960s and early 70s (1967 - 1975) when psychedelic sounds spread to all corners of the globe. There is something about the warmth and the tone of this music, especially that fuzz guitar that sends me into ecstasy. It make me feel as if I am wrapped in cotton wool. While psychedelic music can often sound like a bunch of stoners making a freaked out racket, all of the songs here are exquisitely joyous, beautifully crafted pieces of music, often with ideas and production that still sounds ahead of the curve. Not all of these tracks are intentionally psychedelic, but all have that certain something that can transport one to another place and another time. All the tracks were recorded from vinyl and in some cases the records aren't in tip top condition or were fairly poor pressings to begin with (especially the African records), so apologies for the fidelity in a few places. Hopefully the wonder of the music still shines through. Once again we aren't making a tracklisting available for the podcast but if you want to know what anything is, feel free to get in touch and we will let you know. None of the tracks are mixed but are all segued together. In order, the tracks are from the following countries - USA / Zambia / USA / USA / USA / UK / Algeria / Egypt / Brazil / Nigeria / Mexico / Mexico / USA. The mix contains 13 tracks and lasts 69 minutes and the download is a 192kbps mp3 (90mb). Enjoy."

So there you have it, not your average Ripped In Glasgow post but we'll see how it goes down...

Optimo - On The Floor - Live at Joakim Milky Way Release Party, Paris

A recent two hour set from the Joakim release party, courtesy of the Red Bull Music Academy radio station.

This sees JD Twitch & JG Wilkes on fine form, starting off with modern day Optimo classics like Den Haan's Release The Beast and that tune which samples the theme from Assault On Precinct 13.

Other highlights include a remix of The Midas Touch by Midnight Star, as featured on the recent Summer Synth podcast. Part two goes off the beaten track a bit and we get treated to such delights as Suicide's Ghost Rider and 'California Dreaming' amongst others...

Posting is likely to be very erratic this week as I've got loads of stuff on. I'm having to type this on the fly at work on the iPhone. There's a great Weatherall 'chat & music' thing on the Red Bull site that I'll get up at some point soon as well.

Off back to work now, will try to get something up later on but will more likely be tomorrow...

JG Wilkes - Optimo Podcast 2 - Jerk It

Roll out the bunting - there's a new Optimo Podcast in town!

This time round, it has a very different feel to it, as you can see from the blurb below. They've gone all modern, and actually have an iTunes subscription link on the download page, so it'll all happen automatically next time.

"This podcast is called "(All this talk of Disco...) The Jerking Back and Forth Mix". The title (part-borrowed from a from a Devo song) is an indication of the type of involuntary body responses provoked whilst enjoying these songs as well as the sound itself. The new stuff and the old stuff, the local stuff and the stuff from very far afield is united here through a kind of "loose is tight" jerking rhythm and DIY spirit we love. Although all tracks are at their original tempo and of course not "mixed" as such, there is however some kind of a flow (be it a "jerking" one) to the podcast. Again there is no tracklist for reasons outlined in the notes for "Optimo Podcast 01" but again, if anyone really wants to know what a particular track is, we will be happy to tell them. Collected over the past 30 years or so, none of the music is (that) hard to find. The podcast was recorded using turntables, then the levels balanced here and there in Protools. The mix contains 20 tracks, lasts just under an hour and the download is a 192kbps mp3 (80.9mb). Enjoy."

I had a very enjoyable return to Optimo the other week to see the magnificent Health playing live, but couldn't stay the full time due to having work the next day. Really should make the effort more often as it's one of the few clubs where I don't feel like the oldest cunt in town and it's got the best DJs in Glasgow. But we all know that, don't we...

JD Twitch - Optimo Podcast 1 - Synth Summer

I reckon if I was forced to only listen to one DJ for the rest of my days, desert island style, then that person would be JD Twitch. Over the years he's astonished me with his inventiveness and mixing ability - always has a surprise or two up his sleeve.

This podcast promises to be the first of many, and will eventually be put up on the iTunes store (I think), but in the meantime here's a preview courtesy of the Echatio forum.

Here's the accompanying blurb:

"Shortly the Optimo website is going to have a total revamp and finally enter the 21st century. There will be lots of new features and content and one of the things we are going to introduce is a series of podcasts to take us into the second decade of the third millennium.

These will range from mixes recorded at the club to radio type shows, spoken word, mixes of music that tickles our fancy, or anything else we come up with that we'd like to share.

The first one will be available as a podcast in a few weeks but we have decided to make it available as a Yousendit download in the meantime.

The podcast is called "Synth Summer" and is a selection of (guess what?) synth based music from around the planet. It covers a broad range of styles and a broad time span - from 1980 to some tracks that haven't been released yet, and that may indeed never see the light of day. It is a dj mix but not a club mix. The flow is the way it is so as to be a listening experience rather than for the dancefloor, even though all the tracks are "dance" tracks. Wherever possible, as much of each track as possible has been included.

There is no tracklist as we think in this day and age with the abundance of mixes available on the internet that people often judge something based on the tracklisting rather than actually listening to it. If anyone really wants to know what a particular track is, we will be happy to tell them.

The mix was recorded using two turntables and a laptop. Wherever possible the original vinyl was used but some of the tracks don't exist on vinyl. Track one (which we would like to thank Mr. James Holden for providing us with after searching for it for many years) only exists on a cassette from the early 80s so please excuse the fidelity, although it actually sounds pretty fab considering. A tiny bit of post mix editing was done as one of the tracks skipped during the recording and the levels were a little askew in a couple of places. The mix contains 17 tracks, lasts just over an hour and the download is a 192kbps mp3 and is 84.5mb.

Enjoy."

JD Twitch - Live At Optimo 17th May 2009 - RIPPED IN GLASGOW EXCLUSIVE

So there I was chancing my arm with a request for another Optimo website mix encoded at 320kbps and got an email back saying that he was sorry, the originals had all vanished. Optimo - Drum Attack! Mix

A few years back, JD Twitch did a great series of monthly mixes for the Optimo site. They all had different themes, and were always a nice wee treat for the iPod. Only snag was that they were encoded at a pish bitrate - 128kbps to be precise.

This one was always a favourite of mine, especially the mixing of the TV On The Radio track over the Liquid Liquid one. Magnificent! So - a request popped up on the Echatio Forum the other day, asking if someone could repost it. Being the generous chap he is, Twitch not only uploaded it, but stuck it up at 320kbps! Get this one down your internet pipe - it is truly special. Twitch, if you're reading this, can we get a 320 of the "What On Earth..." one next...?

Big Ned - Big Ned

THE band of the year to come out of Glasgow, and the first CD that's not by Optimo or Julian Cope that I've actually bothered to buy for years. Glasgow's most impressive band for some time, and that's saying something. Influences include "David Lynch, Angelo Badalementi, Smog, Nick Cave, Elvis, Swans, Cash, Chris Isaacs ‘Wicked Game’, Carl Denver and the Gun Club. And most likely Satan."

From the press release: "Thrown into this electric soup is Charles Bukowski, Repo Man, Gummo, Lost Highway, Clint Eastwood, the Bible, the Devil, Glasgow City Barbers window display, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and every impressive boxer who ever entered the ring.

For Big Ned, this is the soundtrack to drag racing, zombies, drinking, shop lifting, dancing like a maniac, arm wrestling, fucking, smoking and Lee Marvin putting the boot in. One hand raised in the air with a stiff middle finger, the other raised with a glass of whisky; saluting those with charm and machismo that make music a delight and who entertain."

I'm not going to upload the whole album as it's not mid 90s techno, and the band deserve your pennies. Fuck sake - it's tenner down Fopp - get down and buy the fucker. I've ripped track one which is the A-side from their 7" single (actually taken from the vinyl to keep the 'Ripped In Glasgow' thang going), go check it oot (especially for the FAB cover of Paint It Black). Now, if I can track down that new Horrors album on vinyl...

Captain Comatose - $100

Something a wee bit different for a Friday teatime - an EP Captain Comatose, a duo featuring Mr Prolific-as-hell, Khan, and one-off partner Paul Bonomo. I remember seeing this now-defunct duo at Optimo sister club Black Rabbit Whorehouse around the time of this release and was blown away by their show.

Anyway - this EP starts off with a couple of mixes of their cover of Iggy & Bowie's track Baby (from The Idiot). Always a winner in my book, I'm a massive fan of both, to the extent that I got a Ziggy Stardust flash tattooed on my inner wrist (not a decision taken lightly). This cover is a lo-fi electro-tastic winner, with a Glitter-beat. I'd recommend the Electronicat Mix.

On the flip, a nice fucked-up vocal twisted disco track (complete with acapella) and then a great 'listening' track, Masoquista. No idea why they put the title track on the B-side - why not just go with Baby as the A-side? Crazy name, crazy guys...

Optimo - BBC Introducing

... in which our intrepid heroes branch away from the comfort zone of the Sub Club for an altogether different Glasgow experience - broadcasting to the nation via Radio 1, sitting in for Vic Galloway (who's away at SXSW, the cunt). Not a single tune from south of the border, this features the cream of new Scottish talent. Worth the money alone for the Big Ned session.

A few Peel-style fuck-ups along the way of course, but this showcase is magnificent - as a licence-fee payer I demand that they get their own show. Check out the tracklisting...

Optimo - 12 hours of Optimo

Here are three full nights at Optimo, which I downloaded from that AWDIO site. The Sub Club doesn't use it anymore, 'too clinical' they say - fair enough.

These recordings are from the following dates:

18th Jan
25th Jan (Burns Night special including band)
8th Feb

I've posted two of these mixes already but there seem to be download issues, so here's a wee Brucie Bonus for anyone who got those two. Obviously this will take FUCKING AGES to download as I'm the only seed for the time being but rest assured I'll leave my internet pipe open for the considerable future...

Twitch - Contort Yourself - Optimo Mix

This is a cover of the James White and The Blacks track from 1978, which actually came out on the Ze label (just like the original). A (wet) dream come true for JD Twitch, I reckon. The mix is disco-tastic and sounds great cranked up full bung.

Track B1 features JD Wilkes (as Naum Gabo) doing a tribute to another JWATBs track, 'Stained Sheets'. Track B2 is Twitch again, doing all sorts of shit with samples of The Fire Engines and The Pop Group. The full story's at the bottom of this page.

No more Optimo live shows as the Sub Club isn't on that Awdio site anymore, but maybe that's a good thing. There's actually a good chance of me getting off my arse and going down one of these days...

Liquid Liquid - Optimo / Cavern

Two classics from Liquid Liquid on the wonderful 99 Records label, taken from a beautiful 3x vinyl, 1x CD & booklet set I picked up last year. The first track is so good someone named a club after it, and the second track got nicked by a certain Grandmaster to became White Lines. Both are bona fide classics in their own rights.

Gutted that I missed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this bunch at Optimo (the club, keep up!) a few years back, but I heard that they played a blinder.

Optimo - Sunday 8th February (1st 3 hours)

So - here's the second in an occasional series of Optimo from the Sub Club. Only managed to get the first 3 hours as my stream cut out for some reason, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick, as my mum used to say. Again, this evening sees JD Twitch missing in action (Australia I think - hope his records ain't dust). As far as I know, Sunday was hosted by JG Wilkes, ably assisted my Ms Mingo-go from Death Disco.

Optimo - Sunday 18th January 2009

If it wasn't for Optimo and Pure, there would be no Ripped In Glasgow. Discovered last week that a website broadcasts whatever's on at the Sub Club in Glasgow, amongst various other worldwide clubs. Thought I'd try to rip the full stream from Sunday night to see if it worked.

No problemo!

This will NOT be a regular event as I don't wanna piss off the wonderful Twitch & Wilkes by ripping off what goes down inside their club, but tune in each Sunday night to hear it for yourself. Alternatively, get off your arse and get the fuck down to the club. My days of doing it certainly aren't over but I'm not the (semi) regular I was in the early daze.

This is a 4hr mp3 file, split into RAR files which you have to unpack. Well worth it, as it features a rare JG Wilkes-only set (Twitch otherwise engaged in the USA).
