Exquisite Corpse - Dream Night Dance Music

Debut album released in 1992 on KK Records.

This was one of a bunch that I got sent just before Xmas from official friend of Ripped In Glasgow, Tim Freeman.

It reminds me of some of the stuff which featured on the first PWOG album (which I no longer seem to have), which isn't surprising seeing as how this album was Tim and Robbert Heynen. He also included their first ever single, X-Out, which I've included here as a pair of bonus tracks. Tim wasn't involved at that point so you can get a good idea of what he added to their sound when you compare it to the main album. After Tim left, Robbert was joined by Debbie Jones, who sadly died a number of years ago. Robert's still producing stuff as Enkidada and Tim's doing the odd bit as well, which I'll put up in due course.

I've just sat and listened to the whole thing again and it is a beautiful collection of tracks. Just the thing for when you get sent home from your work due to a power cut (which hopefully won't get sorted anytime soon). Check out these reviews on Discogs which um it up very nicely. Contrasts well with the later EC stuff, like Chalice/Kupuri which was one of my first ever posts (and one of my first ever fuck-ups).

PWOG - Peel Session

Vinyl release of the Peel Session which was broadcast on 10th June 1994.

This features alternate recordings of Pull & Break from the Rhythms Vol 1 double-pack I posted last week, and a different version of Dust from the Out Now! 12".

Track B1 has to be listened to on headphones as it moves from left to right and back again - a good demonstration of the concept of 'stereo' for someone who doesn't understand it. It merges into scary ambient B2 as one track so I've left it as one track on the mp3.

Fuck knows what the John Peel listeners made of this, I know he played some mental stuff but this is out there. Bet he fuckin loved it though. I still miss the old cunt, although one of his sons (using the original 'Ravenscroft' name) has been on 6music a few times filling in for people and he's been like a chip off the old block music-wise. Banter's not bad either, but I've yet to hear him play a record at the wrong speed...

Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Psychick Rhythms Vol. 1

A handy double pack of 'mixing tools' from 1993, as played all over the place.

I've been wanting to post this for ages but could't find it. Just clocked it there on a shelf from the side of the spine. Magic!

It came with the following caveat:

"Warning: this object has nothing to do with art or artificial intelligence. This double package (12" version) was designed for mixing, for breaks, for possession, for collectors."

That's me sorted then.

This is the record that I was going on about in this post, when the guy blew my frazzled mind by telling be that the vinyl contained an extra track: side A and side C at the same time created a new track with 'hidden messages'. So - by way of an apology for a shocking lack of posts over the last week I've done the necessary on the decks and have 'created' said track just for you. Judge for yourselves whether there's any hidden nonsense or not...

Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Live Dutch Radio Show 1995

So here we go - the holy grail of all things PWOG - a live set!

A bizarre day today - shitty day at work (Tuesday after a bank holiday weekend, go figure), then checked my email to find a message from none other than Mr Tim Freeman:

"...hope you don't mind me mailing you directly. I had a trawl thru my tapes and found a DAT tape I'd forgotten about, it's a recording of a short gig we did in 1995 for dutch radio station VPRO...not the best show we ever did, but it's ok-ish... anyways thought you might enjoy it. I did my best on the mix but I remember being a bit nervous as I'd never done a live-to-air mix before...so it could have been better, as could the band's performance. Also there was almost no audience (it was in a small venue, like a bar) so that didn't help the vibe...

There's also many versions of Kraak on another DAT, but most of 'em aren't worth bothering with..however I might get round to editing the better bits together at some point, if you like I'll keep you posted."

Wow! I replied back that this was excellent news, and got this in reply:

"don't get too excited, it's not that good :) but it's ok, might trigger a few memories for those who saw us live...

will keep you posted if more stuff gets done/found..

Well I can assure you that Tim is talking shite, from what I've listened to so far it's sounding mighty fine - taking me right back...

The other thing that was bizarre was an email which literally came in two minutes after Tim's initial one, from Tony fae Fife - the man who supplied us with the demo tape from below, with these thoughts:

"is that not tim freeman himself who left the last comment on the pwog demos post? sure looks like it... pity he didnt leave contact details. if there's one person out there who will have live tapes, its got to be him..."

Mental, eh? Tim - you are an official Ripped In Glasgow LEGEND!!

Yesterday I mentioned that I'd had a few goodies through in the email from you wonderful people. Well, check this one out, courtesy of 'Tony fae Fife'.

Aware of my quest to track down the missing live recording of the infamous Barras gig, Tony managed to source a copy of this cassette, containing 1989 demo versions of four tracks.

Fuck me! This is the holy grail of PWOG folklore - track A1 is an early version of Maenad, and B1/B2 (both outstanding) are unreleased to my knowledge. What a find - Tony got in touch with a guy who turned out to be their DJ back in the early days who had the tape. Obviously asked him if there were any live shows knocking about, but to no avail (I'm very aware of just how much a cunt I am for ditching all my tapes including THAT Barras gig). There's a great anecdote from him copied into my email which probably wouldn't be fair to put on here but it seems like they were heady days indeed!

Jeez, between this, the Sabres post below and that Sabres Peel Session you folks are OUT THERE on the hard-to-find shit. Keep sending them my way, it's all much appreciated...

The Ultimate Life Experience - Escape From Noise

This came out on the KK label in 1993 and I bought it 'cos I was sure it must be Psychick Warriors related, and sure enough it's engineered, mixed and produced by Tim Freeman. Result!

Three mixes, all of which are a bit more 'techno' than what you'd expect from KK, but every one's a winner. The B1 mix adds a bit of 'ruff' drums on top - you'll know what I mean when you hear it.

This record actually sounds way better than I remember it - I think I was a bit disappointed first time round by the lack of mad PWOG-style noises and percussion.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of PWOG...

PWOG - Kraak

Three untitled mixes here from the ever-mysterious Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia.

Track A1 sounds very like what I remember of their live show - subtle-as-hell changes through a percussive riff that sucks you right in before spitting you back out again. It actually says "all jammed by PWOG" on the sleeve so that kinda explains it.

A2 starts with a bump then goes much more stripped down and focuses on the noises rather than the percussion. Still quite an up'n'down kinda thing though.

B is over 12 mins of pure PWOG magic. An epic cut of the track which will blow your mind. I wish I have a recording of one of (ov?) their live shows. Can anyone help...?

Halo / Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Not At All / Exit 23 / Obsidian

I thought I was onto a super-limited-rare-as-fuck PWOG release when I saw this double-pack in Fatcat Records in London. Turns out it's a promo that's not even on KK Records (it's on Restless Records)!

The first 12" features Halo, I band I wasn't familiar with, but sound like an American version of the Mary Chain. Actually really good, track A1 is mixed by the Dust Brothers - the original US ones who made the UK ones change their name to you-know-who. I'm afraid B2's got a bit of a sticky scratch at one point but I've included it anyway.

The second 12" has got the three stunning Drum Club mixes of Exit 23 on one side and the full 20min version of Obsidian on the flip. This was great news for me as for some reason I only had these on CD singles beforehand. What was I thinking..?

The Drum Club mixes 2 & 3 form the one 16 minute epic, so that's how you're getting them.

Obsidian? Check out this review on Discogs, which tells the story of the track much better than I ever could. This would make a nice companion to Acid Ted's Global Communication stuff that he's got up today...

Can't remember when this was from, but I had a phase in about 94 where anything that used 'thee' and 'ov' rather than 'the' and 'of' got bought. Talking of which, got my tickets to go and see the mighty Throbbing Gristle at the Tramway in Glasgow - go check it out...

Orbital - Lush 3 (PWOG / CJ Bolland Remixes)

I know I said in a previous post that I never had much time for Orbital, but I still managed to buy a few records back in 92/93. The main reason for buying this one was the PWOG remix. I'd actually forgotten about it until a shelf fell down in the hall just there (I didn't bump into it, honest), and about 100 records spilled down onto the floor. After I eventually found a screwdriver and managed to sort it, I noticed the two Lush 12"s as I put the records back. "Wonder what that PWOG remix sounds like these days?" I thought, so here you go. It's sounding, er, lush... a nice companion to the tracks below.

If anyone wants the other 12" (2x Orbital mixes & Underworld) leave a comment and I'll get it up at some point...

After listening to the Black Dog/PWOG mix posted on the excellent Light Of The Night blog, I couldn't not put this up after spotting it just there. An odd release, in that the title track is a kinda beatless/abstract thing with weird noises on it, then there are three outstanding housey cuts. Someone on Discogs reckons it's a lost classic and I'm tempted to agree with them.

My pick o'the bunch is B1. Not the most appealing cover sleeve but I guess that's the point...

What to say about this bunch? Bunch o'weirdos from the Netherlands, in with all the Temple Ov Psychick Youth malarkey (entry requirement = a sample of your blood, saliva and spunk).

Doesn't stop them from making brilliant spooked-out tribal music though. They played at the first ever Pure at Barrowlands and I got told that their pre-gig ritual was to lie in silence complete darkness for an hour before they went onstage (at the Barras? Dearie me). Got talking to the merchandise guy and was checking out their latest release at the time which was a double-pack of 'rhythms' for mixing. The guy said "if you're getting it get the vinyl rather than the CD 'cos you get an extra track". I didn't do CDs but was intrigued as the tracklistings were the same. "You play side A and side C on decks at the same time and it creates an extra track with hidden messages". My mind exploded at this point and I had to run upstairs to see Derrick May. Crazy days and nights back then...

Eventually when I did get my decks I tried it out one night. Load of pish! That guy must'a been fucked...

Last one of the day. Although 95% of my records are on top of my friend Tufty's bathroom, this is one that slipped through the net. A wee trip down memory lane here as I reckon this hasn't been listened to in nigh on 10 years.

This hails from my Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia phase - this lot were some offshoot (also on the KK label). Either that or they just used the same font and I was sucked in... Trippy tribal nonsense indeed, but it's sounding pretty darn good today. Chalice is the upbeat one and Kupuri is more comedown.
