Andrew Weatherall - 6 Mix - Screamadelica Special

Recent Weatherall show in collaboration with Primal Scream.

Well, what can I say? One of the most inspired musical pairings of all time, this has pretty much set out the stall for the last 20 years of my life. When I first heard back in January about the Screamadelica gigs this weekend, I bought a ticket on autopilot (as always), but haven't really given a shit about it either way.

Until now.

It's Primal Scream week on 6 Music, and this started things off on Sunday, along with an Alan McGee 'First Time' show. Things come to a climax with the broadcast of Friday night's show on 6. I won't be listening to it as it's Saturday I'm off to see the show (same as all the TRUEFANS as it was announced first - fuck I hate myself sometimes), but will no doubt download it when I get back.

Being a sucker for a deluxe vinyl product, I nearly had to go for a wank when I saw this, and then THIS. Just as well I got a bit of cash for my birthday last week. Which one to buy though - the red one looks better but the white one's more limited (and signed)...

So, the Weatherall show then. It's great to hear him in 'reminiscing' mode, plenty of anecdotes as you'd expect. I'm coincidentally reading Jah Wobble's autobiography just now as well, so it all ties in very nicely, thank you very much.

Back for good? Nah, but who knows what's round the corner...

Andrew Weatherall - ALFOS Limited Edition DJ Mix - 19 August 2010

Recent CD mix, exclusive to the first 50 folk through the door at ALFOS in London.

Andrew Weatherall - mind him? Used to be a permanent feature on this blog but he's not been on here for a good couple of weeks now. Mind you, me being a lazy bastard hasn't helped. Don't worry, got another wee treat lined up over the weekend.

A HUGE thanks to Brother Johnston for sending me this CD up in the post - it arrived today and I've got it on just now. A big departure from the previous mix I posted, as this one is all electronic music (so far). Nice sleeve as well, signed by the man himself. Oddly, it's spilt into five tracks (four short ones and a 50min one) but flows perfectly as a mix right through. I'm currently about halfway through it and in my unbiased opinion it's sounding fairly magnificent. A few oldies thrown in as well, so I don't feel completely out of touch.

*EDIT* now finished listening - nice and mellow (please shoot me for using that word) at the end as well. Not a 'club' mix, so definitely up the ALFOS street right enough. Sounds like a great wee night they've got down at The Drop.

Right Sean, how about persuading Audrey to accompany yourself up here to Bonnie Scotch-land for a wee ALFOS night at Sleazys or The Captains Rest - they seem about right size-wise...

Exclusive rip of the Audrey remix of the new single by Nick Cave et al, courtesy of our pals over at FACT Magazine.

Ooh, I've been waiting for this baby for a while now and it doesn't disappoint. Fuck me - the mix is aptly titled, to quote the FACT article, it "teases a low-slung, snake-charming post-punk groove out of the original, complete with speaker-ripping subs and more echo than a batcave." Not a word of a lie - if I heard this on a big sound system it would dislodge membrane in my head.

Can't wait to hear the full Grinderman album, and we're off to see them at the Barras next month. Imagine if they attempted to pull this off live? (nae chance!)

What a nice thing to arrive home to after a shitty Monday in the pissing rain. Thanks to FACT Magazine for hosting the mix, which it looks like you'll only be able to get via the iTunes version of the album. Well, I'll be getting the vinyl so this post is completely justified (in my head).

Did I mention the video? Fuck me - it's got topless women, werewolves, guns, blood, more topless ladies, freaky imagery, Nick Cave shooting lasers out of his eyes and all sorts of other nonsense, courtesy of John Hilcoat of 'The Road' fame...

Andrew Weatherall - 6 Mix - 8 Aug 2010

Latest instalment of his occasional 6 Mix show, broadcast last night.

He seems a bit fucked after his trip to the Big Chill, but is still (mostly) firing on all cylinders for this set. Worryingly, the exclusive solo track (Poem Or Prayer) is from a new album which "may never see the light of day" due to legal wrangles. Wonder what that's all about?!?

There are a couple of changes to his handwritten setlist that appears below as well, most notably the addition of the Chris Carter mix of Factory Floor, which has been very popular on my turntables in recent weeks.

Make sure you check out the interesting reinterpretations of a couple of classics down near the end of the main set - I particularly like the Touch Me I'm Sick one, will need to get the album that's from.

For once I've actually managed to edit out the news as well, so it's a 3-part ZIP file. Woo-hoo!

No sign of the cover of Blue Monday mentioned on the tracklisting below, but here it is on YouTube if you feel the need.

Oh, did I mention the half-hour mix at the end? Fuckin magnificent! I shit you not - it's got a bit of an old-skool flavour, what with that piano on the first track then a wee kinda Mory Kanté flavour (a lazy comparison, I know) on the Mim Suleiman tune. The final track's a remix off the 'Pox' album that was floating about on Soundcloud for a while but seems to have been pulled now. Hmmm...

From the ever-unmissable Dummy Mag site, here's another 'ALFOS' inspired mix from Mr W, featuring what he's now calling 'Psyche-Disco'. Fuck - need to get down to London town one of these Thursdays.

The accompanying interview is quite an eye-opener, not least because he reveals that he's remixed a track by Grinderman, as well as LA's Warpaint. Oh, and there's a new solo album in the can.

Andrew Weatherall - 6 Mix - 23 May 2010

Latest 6 Mix from you-know-who, from a wee while ago.

Fucking hell, I've got so much stuff to catch up on. This was posted as a link in the comments a couple of posts down. I actually missed it for some reason (the Sunday factor maybe?) but here it is in its full 2hr glory. Thanks to Matthew for this original link that I've reupped (it was a bit slow).

The first 90 mins is the usual mix of old and new with the usual banter, ie excellent stuff. Yet more acts that I'll need to add to the list to check out (not enough hours in the day for the next few weeks). The 'disco' mix this time round features Tim Fairplay from 'Boardroom' fame, alongside various other dancey types that I'd be lying if I said I was up on. So out of touch these days *sigh*...

The disco section is particularly good this time round - think I'll rip it on its own for the iPod, will stick a link in here when/if I get around to it.

Right - another weekend away beckons, this time slightly closer to home than Barcelona but will no doubt be fairly mental (eh, Bill?) - lots of backlog to post that I'll get up upon safe return to Glasgow...

That last time I saw Weatherall play with Ivan Smagghe it just wasn't doing it for me if I'm being honest. It was a Friday night at the Sub Club, so I guess it was what the troops were after. Or maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old cunt.

Well it's been a while...

This is a great mix of (mostly) noisy guitar and dubby nonsense and it's doing the job for me right now. Despite getting regular emails from Vice, I didn't clock this mix until Johnnyboy posted it on the Primal Scream forum. Cheers pal!

Think I'm gonna check out quite a lot of the acts on here that I've not heard of before, he seems to be digging Higamos Hogamos quite a bit just now as there's another track by them on an exclusive mix CD that's being given out to the first 100 punters to arrive at his new monthly residency. From the latest Rotters mailout:

Two Lone Swordsmen - Big Silver Shining Motor Of Sin EP

12" EP released on Warp from 2004.

So, yesterday's madness too much for you? Prefer to get a nice wee easy-to-digest dose of Two Lone Swordsmen rather than 17hrs, 16 mins and 54 seconds of live stuff (according to my iTunes)? Nae bother - here you go then.

This came out round about the same time as the Double Gone Chapel album, but it's much more electronic, hence (I'm guessing) why it wasn't included. Same format as the Sex Beat 12" - you get two Weatherall vocal-led tunes on side A, and their instrumental/dub counterparts over on the flip.

I don't know who I'm trying to kid on that I'm done with blogging, it's much less hassle just to fire stuff up when I'm in the mood though, rather than the daily juggernaut of postings that was 2009. Mind you, Google/Blogger seem to be pressing the big [DELETE] button on lots of blogs these days (cheerio Acid Ted) so catch it while it's hot. I always try not to upload stuff that people are likely to be actually buying though, and always amend/pull if asked to do so - mind you that doesn't seem to stand for much, especially considering that stuff like this is still on the go). It's a funny old world...

Honkeyfinger - Running On Empty EP

3-track 7" from last year, on Hoarse Records.

This was limited to 500 copies (mine is #152), so this shouldn't cause any problems sales-wise for anyone.

Seeing as how it's Andrew Weatherall's birthday today (he's 47 - 10 years older them me), I thought I'd break my blogging silence and stick up a genuine 'rip' for the first time in ages.

Honkeyfinger first appeared on the Wrong Meeting album a few years back, and is currently firing out stuff like this on his own label. He describes himself thus: "It's all about a making one hell of a pounding, primal, amped-up & skronked out blues racket. Honkeyfinger is the one man band from the bowels of the earth, erupting molten fuzz lapsteel, screaming harmonica riffs and desperate bestial howling in a scorching hot cocktail of heavy raw blues power. The Honkeyfinger sound hotwires the electric freak rock of vintage Beefheart, Blue Cheer, ZZTop, and Black Sabbath into a jumping, lurching monster. Boiling up the ghosts of Bukka White, Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker with the bones of the country blues, laced with the acid fried heaviosity of the Butthole Surfers - this is the thick stinking soup that Mr Honkeyfinger serves hot."

Sounds good to me. Andrew Weatherall adds a dubby edge to the title track and Mr Honkeyfinger throws in a nice wee cover of the John Mayall track on B1.

So, same time same place next year...?

Andrew Weatherall - Disco Umpty Number Six

A brand new piece of dubbed-out disco magic from Mr W, hot off the press from the 6 Mix below.

I thought this was so good that it deserved it's own post, and I know that you will all buy it anyway when it comes out (eventually), won't you?

There's a great noise on it that sounds like when it's game over on Pac Man - you'll know what I mean when you hear it. Add in a great orchestral-synth-cum-strung-out-guitar breakdown, a wee bit more of the Pac Man noise then it's back to business. File this one in the same drawer as 'Brother Johnson' and 'Uptown'. Aye, it's that good. One for the next Boardroom release?

Anyone in the Glasgow area MUST get themselves down to the Sub Club on 26th March (ie just over a couple of weeks), for a double-header of Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe as part of the Smirnoff-sponsored 'So Slam Club' malarkey that's going on this month.

Two Lone Swordsmen - Sex Beat

12" from 2004 on Rotters, which I am uploading to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Lux Interior's passing. I thought this would be more fitting than a predictable Cramps tune, and it's more in tune with the sort of stuff I've posted previously (Weatherall? Predictable? Me?)

This was the first 2LS 'band' track I heard and couldn't believe my ears! Weatherall singing! A Gun Club tune! With guitars! Magic!

I saw them play at the Arches on the back of the Double Gone Chapel album, at one of those "hunners-of-cunts-playing-in-different-arches" affairs that were always sweaty as fuck. I'd promised myself never to go back to a club night there as it was getting a bit neddy (and I was knocking on a bit), but this was an exception. I remember this sweaty gurning cunt with his top off appearing next to me down the front, pointed stagewards and going "is that Green Velvet pal?" --> hmm, nuff said. The band were ACE, and I'd sell my granny to get my paws on a live set from them at around this time.

There are instrumental versions of each mix on the 12" but you're not getting them as, (a) I felt it was a wee bit too soon to stick the whole thing up, (b) Weatherall's vocal, maaaan, and (c) I couldn't be arsed.

So there you go. Lux, RIP wherever you are and please don't any other musical hero die this year...

Andrew Weatherall - Roundtable on 6 Music - 21 January 2010

Guess who was a guest reviewer on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable show this evening?

Alongside Lamacq, Bernard Butler and Kid Harpoon, Audrey gives us his tuppence-worth on the week's new releases. He's turning into quite the radio personality these days, and I'll take plenty more where that came from.

As well as the reviews (which I've quoted a bit of below), he reveals that a new album should be ready for the end of spring/early summer. Grand. Also, a tracklisting has finally appeared for his Hogmanay Mix, which they must have got off him today I reckon.

Be sure to listen out for some cunt asking for a Weatherall remix of the Gorillaz tune at about the 36 min mark...

Conemelt - Splinter Group (video)

Excellent Super-8 video shot in Iceland of non-album track Splinter Group, which appeared on the bumper compilation Fresh Emissions.

In my pre-Xmas chatter with Ashley and Nat from Conemelt, Ashley dropped this bombshell:

"...just tried phoning a friend who shot footage of us and Andrew on tour in Iceland looking at sulphurous geysers and bubbling mud baths etc (how very Pink Floyd In Pompeii) and then set this footage to Splinter Group (his choice). It's really lovely. If he uploaded it would you be able to host that on your site..?"

Hmm, let me think about that one... He said he'd have a look for it then I got an email on the evening of Xmas eve with the link to it. Mental...

Anyway, I got in touch with the director, Camille, who gave an interesting insight into the production of said vid:

"...I shot it myself on Super-8, it sat around for ten years and I rediscovered it (under a pile of detritus, there's a pattern forming here d'you see?) and stuck it together. I shot a load of new footage and took out the shots of Conemelt, the finished item doesn't have them in at all, except a split second of Grant falling over that was too good to get rid of. I sent it to a load of short film festivals but nobody wanted it, I'm happy to turn it back into a music video again. Hopefully it will find a home on your blog.

We did have a hoot, the 'Melt was mighty then. I wish everyone could have seen it. That bloke from the Sugarcubes took us to a bar and showed us the internet, I'd never seen it before. A couple of years ago they uprooted the entire bar from Reykjavik and installed it in the Frieze arts fair in London, I drank a gin and tonic in there. One of the most surreal moments in my life..."

This is actually the second version of the video that I got, and it features a certain Mr Weatherall as well as the Conemelt trio and a couple of others. You should check the nick of them, especially Ashley in his Pigface t-shirt (insert your own "dodgy geysers" joke here). It actually reminds me of the video that appeared for Laughing Boy by Julian Cope on the Copeulation VHS back in the day.

I can't actually lay my hands on my Fresh Emissions albums (flat is currently a bombsite) but I've ripped the audio from the video for you to download. *EDIT* Camille, video director extrordinaire has supplied me with a high-quality mp3 version *EDIT* The Vimeo link also includes an mp4 download link for the video so that you can take it with on on the go if you're that way inclined.

Andrew Weatherall - OST, Resonance FM - 9 January 2010

Yesterday Audrey popped in for a natter with Jonny Trunk on his OST show on Resonance FM, bring a plethora of weird and wonderful sounds with him.

"Today on the OST we are joined by producer, collector, artist and general all round world wide super person Andy Weatherall. For years this man of fine taste has collected film music and library music from all corners of the globe. And here he is slightly showing off about it, we hope..."

Fuck me - this is seriously weird shit to be going out on a Saturday afternoon. I really enjoyed listening to it before heading over to the mystic east yesterday, you London folks are lucky to have a station like that broadcasting - I'd never really dipped into its schedule before having a look into it yesterday.

As well as various film-related choice cuts, there's some great banter which occasionally strays off topic, including a nice wee analysis of The Littlest Hobo at one point. Listen out for the competition entries flooding in (to win CDs of 'Pox' and 'Boardroom 2') which attempt to insert weather-related puns into movie titles.

Aye, good stuff all round, allow yourself two hours to check this one out...
