Imagine my joy when I got emails yesterday with links to (firstly) various Two Lone Swordsmen dates from the 2002 Turntables and Machines tour, followed by a LOAD of Groovetech recordings from 2000-2002. Mental! I've not had a chance to wade through these yet, but at Robert's request I'm passing them straight onto you, so here we go.

Too much? Hmm, I think what I'm gonna do is dig out an old iPod, scrub it and fill it with all of this. Hope they're tagged properly!

Fuck me, this should keep us going for a week or two. Thanks a million Robert, wherever you are...

Betty Botox Presents... The World Of Betty Botox

Rare 2xLP from Glasgow's own sultry diva, Betty Botox, from 2005.

So - went to my last Optimo there on Sunday night. There are two more to go but there's no way I can make either of them, so this was our big farewell. FUCK ME - it was the best one I've ever had. Crowd were totally up for it, and the tunes ticked all the boxes including lots of Optimo classics, what sounded like Merzbow(!) at one point, along with a brilliant industrial track and a bit of Bauhaus which kept the smile on my (ex?) goth girlfriend's coupon all night. Not to mention a few Pure anthems including a couple with Hoover noises thrown in (always a good thing). Add in a couple of en-masse singalongs at the end and there you have it. Mental. JD Twitch reported that it was the best atmosphere that he had seen in 23 years of DJing and I'll not argue with that - magnificent stuff. Fuck knows what they're going to pull out of the bag for the last couple (I've heard the words 'Divine impersonator' bandied about though)...

I've finally recovered, this being Wednesday an' all that, so here's three tracks (side B) off a set of "quantized bootleg re-edits made suitable for mixing" from in-house slut Betty, which should be familiar to anyone who's been to the club. The original tracks are in brackets after the Botox'd titles, so as you can see it's a pretty fuckin varied list. The full album is available digitally from Juno if you like what you hear here.

I've gone on and on about Optimo in the past and it has been a life changing club (alongside predecessor Pure), but the time has come to move on to pastures new. I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunity to go and see the cunts DJ in the future at one-offs and whatnot so no need to panic (might even manage to fit one in this Friday). However, the end is nigh for this particular vehicle.

Suicide - Ghost Riders

Tenth Anniversary gig, recorded at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in Sept 1981.

For no other reason than I'm feeling pretty darn excited about seeing this pair in a few weeks down at the Hammersmith Apollo, here's a rip of a nicely packaged vinyl reissue that popped out in 1998.

I would have loved to have been at this gig - it sounds completely fucking mental. Mind you, any gigs I've heard by them are completely fucking mental (esp this one).

As I type this, I am hearing via 6 Music that Liam Gallagher is indeed the best frontman of all time, so before I go and slash my wrists please take the time to download and listen to this wee gem. If any of you are heading to the Stooges/Suicide gig on Sunday 2nd May, lemme know and I'll happily buy you a pint to say 'thanks' for following this blog.

Honkeyfinger - Running On Empty EP

3-track 7" from last year, on Hoarse Records.

This was limited to 500 copies (mine is #152), so this shouldn't cause any problems sales-wise for anyone.

Seeing as how it's Andrew Weatherall's birthday today (he's 47 - 10 years older them me), I thought I'd break my blogging silence and stick up a genuine 'rip' for the first time in ages.

Honkeyfinger first appeared on the Wrong Meeting album a few years back, and is currently firing out stuff like this on his own label. He describes himself thus: "It's all about a making one hell of a pounding, primal, amped-up & skronked out blues racket. Honkeyfinger is the one man band from the bowels of the earth, erupting molten fuzz lapsteel, screaming harmonica riffs and desperate bestial howling in a scorching hot cocktail of heavy raw blues power. The Honkeyfinger sound hotwires the electric freak rock of vintage Beefheart, Blue Cheer, ZZTop, and Black Sabbath into a jumping, lurching monster. Boiling up the ghosts of Bukka White, Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker with the bones of the country blues, laced with the acid fried heaviosity of the Butthole Surfers - this is the thick stinking soup that Mr Honkeyfinger serves hot."

Sounds good to me. Andrew Weatherall adds a dubby edge to the title track and Mr Honkeyfinger throws in a nice wee cover of the John Mayall track on B1.

So, same time same place next year...?

Swans - Liverpool Mardi Gras - 25 Oct 1987

Rare bootleg of a great band at their peak.

I was a wee bit too young to be going to see the likes of the Swans in 1987, but managed it a couple of years later. Completely insane, although I was really really drunk - I remember being still steaming at school the next day after getting in at about 4am from Edinburgh on a Sunday night. Ah, them were the days.

I got this from DimeaDozen in FLAC format, and they dont like you mp3ing the stuff but let's be honest - a cassette from 1987 aint gonna lose too much by being converted at 320kbps so there you go.

Actually saw Michael Gira a couple of years ago supporting the Boredoms and to be honest it was a bit of a yawn-fest - not exactly up there with this madness, but it was about 20 years later so I suppose I can let the cunt off with it.

This bootleg? Fucking AMAZING - captures them at their most ferocious, according to the blurb that came with the download "audiences were collapsing and vomiting due to the extreme volume". Sounds good to me. There's a great bit right at the end when some guy staggers on stage and complains about the noise!

Aye, perfect listening before the Friday night of the year so far - Archie Bronson Outfit at King Tuts then Weatherall/Smagghe at the Sub Club. Chin chin, m'dears...

Barry Choonz - Pure Anthems

Superb mix of old classics from the finest club ever to grace the planet.

This came to me via the Ripped In Glasgow Facebook Group, which I started up a while back in the vain hope that some of you folk would start putting up stuff of your own. Well whaddya know - it's fuckin taking off! Go check it oot.

Barry has indeed mixed together some Pure anthems - I shook my thang to every one of these back in the day...

Regular viewers may remember that once upon a time I said that my 'desert island DJ' would be JD Twitch and this mix is inspired by the music he played (alongside partner-in-crime Brainstorm) at Pure in Edinburgh. Check out his more-together-than-the-rest-of-us ramblings about the MADNESS about halfway down this page. After this he went on to start up Optimo back in his Glasgow hometown, with fellow spinner JG Wilkes. A week or so ago it was announced that the mighty 'Mo was to finish after 12 and a bit years. A shame? Maybe, but it's been a helluva ride, and that's pretty good going for ANY club. If you read the post on the forum it's pretty obvious that they'll be back in some form or another so all is not lost. I won't make to the final night (25th April), but will be there on the 11th for my own personal 'cheerio', after the Detachments gig at King Tuts. They've done a Fabric CD as well, due for release on 10 May, looking good judging by the tracklisting here.

So, cheers for the mix Barry, and there's plenty more where this came from over on the Facebook group...

Andrew Weatherall - Disco Umpty Number Six

A brand new piece of dubbed-out disco magic from Mr W, hot off the press from the 6 Mix below.

I thought this was so good that it deserved it's own post, and I know that you will all buy it anyway when it comes out (eventually), won't you?

There's a great noise on it that sounds like when it's game over on Pac Man - you'll know what I mean when you hear it. Add in a great orchestral-synth-cum-strung-out-guitar breakdown, a wee bit more of the Pac Man noise then it's back to business. File this one in the same drawer as 'Brother Johnson' and 'Uptown'. Aye, it's that good. One for the next Boardroom release?

Anyone in the Glasgow area MUST get themselves down to the Sub Club on 26th March (ie just over a couple of weeks), for a double-header of Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe as part of the Smirnoff-sponsored 'So Slam Club' malarkey that's going on this month.

Various - Kalevala Records

A personal holy grail that I had bits and bobs of, floating around on poor quality mp3s. Just ripped them all there and thought you lot might as well get a sniff of 'em...

An extravagant payday-timed eBay purchase from last week which I'd given up all hope of ever seeing. What is it? For the uninitiated, check this out. There's a great fake website here as well.

Rather than my own pish chat, here's text I've pinched from this Probe Records page to accompany each 7".

001 - Draculas Daughter - Candy

Like a bit of 60's New York landed in Helsinki in 1997. The four young ladies who make up this group consider themselves artists rather than musicians, much like the early Velvet Underground. The song itself is a piece of prime quasi-Velvets dedicated to the famed Factory transsexual Candy Darling and features guest vocals from the Nico of the north-lands Kristina Bruuk. As the debut release on a fledgling label Kalevala couldn't have done better. Jesus And Mary Chain, eat your hearts out.

This is actually the third release for the girls, previously they've made two (very limited) singles on their own private label. Don't bother trying to find them because, unless you live in Helsinki, you've got more chance of finding a Beatles acetate.

002 - The Fuckers - Sexy Roy Orbison

The world's only Lapp punk band don't care one whit for the pop-punk emo-core posturings of their Californian contemporaries (Green Day / Offspring / NoFX etc), in fact this record gives the impression they'd happily kill them and eat them (it'd make a change from reindeer meat at least). They don't care about anything. A ferocious amphetamine blast of pure realpunk hatred from a group that's existed in almost total isolation for over ten years, and whilst their old-skool cousins (Extreme Noise Terror / Napalm Death etc) may have sold out to the metal dollar The Fuckers have remained true to their hardcore roots. For that reason they are, without doubt, the hardest, fiercest and most aggressive punk band on planet Earth. Hear this and despair, pop-kid.

With luck (or perhaps that's bad luck) the Fuckers hope to land on these shores next year to play at a series of Cider Festivals (the psycho scrumpy being the only thing in the world they will admit a liking for).

Anyone old enough to remember the Norse invasions of the dark ages will want to emigrate now.

003 - Gimpo - Gimpo

An absolute must for fans of the KLF / JAMMs this being their legendary roadie, driver and, more notoriously, film-maker (it was Gimpo that filmed the famed Million Quid incineration). Now he's turned his talents to music and, in collaboration with Finnish techno-psychos High End World Receiver, has produced a debut single of gargantuan proportions. A crushing slab of Industrial riffage and Godzilla size Atom Bomb beats make this a true dance-floor krasha, but the tirade of four-letter words on top and the rousing chorus of "You Fucking Twat" make this one Kalevala release you will not be hearing on the wireless.

Anyone thinking the Prodigy own the copyright on Extreme Dance-Metal Carnage better think again...Gimpo is here to eat you alive. And thank Gruad for that!

004 - The Daytonas - Faster, Gimpo, Faster, Kill! Kill! Kill!

Super speedy surf-core from this band of seven brothers who've been constantly gigging since the original surf-beat craze hit Finland in the early 60's. The Daytonas have remained true to the original fun, fast, frantic sound sound of this music - so anyone expecting the clever, know-it-all, tongue in cheek irony of Man Or Astroman and their hodad ilk will be sorely disappointed. If, however, you're still diggin' the sound of old California back when the days were short and the nights were long you're in for a treat, Surfin Bird!

The title? Yep it's that Gimpo again. He's certainly made a name for himself over in Finland.

Oh yeah, don't confuse these with the Swedish surf outfit of the same name.

005 - The Blizzard King - American Trilogy EP

Incredible 3-track Extended Play 7" from the Jesus of Cool himself. Opening with a stunning version of "Break On Through", featuring a storming Hammond work-out of hyper-Manzarekian proportions, followed by a startling rendition of "Strangers in the night" (This being the recording from a parallel universe in which Old Blue Eyes didn't refuse to be in the same building as the Doors, but invited them into his studio for a full-on Drink, Drugs and Jam session.) As if this isn't enough already, this classic 7" is rounded off by one of the Fat Elvis's all time greats "In the Ghetto".

006 - Aurora Borealis - Aurora Borealis

Two superb ambient sound-paintings, from this reclusive collective of shamanic Artists, Poets and Musicians. Deep within the Arctic Circle, far from the cities and industrial decay of the modern world, they have produced these sonic sculptures, influenced solely by the protean wastes of their Lapp homeland. This is sombre, soulful and dreamy stuff - right from the heart of the Lapp zeitgeist. But don't think that it's in any way colourless, joyless or impenetrable, far from it - Those of you who have cooled your souls at the eternal 3 a.m. of melancholy, will find much in this music which speaks directly to your secret mind.

It would be unfair to burden these isolated art-makers with crass comparisons with the work of others. However, for those of you who won't buy anything unless you think you know what you're getting, this record would sit happily next to the finest work of The Orb, or (of course) the KLF's "Chill Out".
